GOAL ORIENTATION INDEX (GOI) developed by Dr. Kathryn Atman in 1985 is self-report inventory that provides students with a profile of their goal achievement styles and challenges students to set goals related to their academic progress and how to develop plans for successful goal accomplishment.

HIGHWAY TO SUCCESS RESEARCH BASE
Initiated in 1984 as a mentor-based maturational development program at Washington Park Middle School, Washington, Pennsylvania, research was designed to examine the importance of student goal orientation. Since that time eight grade-level research studies examined the difference in grade point average between high achieving students (GPA – 3.25) and non-achieving students (GPA -1.99). Results indicated a significant difference between achieving and non achieving students' goal orientation in the following eight goal orientated areas:

  1. Recognized a need, problem, challenge, or opportunity
  2. Set a goal
  3. Visualize the goal
  4. Organize and establish a plan
  5. Implementation of the plan
  6. Procrastination
  7. Completion of what was started
  8. Have a purpose, a long-range direction

USER FRIENDLY CLASSROOM IMPLEMENTATION that involves administration, teachers, and students. Teachers learn how to walk-along-side students while staff development sessions construct ways for the teachers to move from manager to coach, facilitator, and encourager, while maintaining control over their classroom.
