Students get a taste of chicken soup, and a lesson to take along

Middletown, Pa. -- Kunkel Elementary students had a taste of chicken soup recently. On May 1, Kunkel Elementary School was delighted to host Bill Sanders from the National Character Education Foundation. Mr. Sanders, author of the well-known "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book series, entertained the children and squeezed in some wisdom, as well.
He conveyed four important topics in a morning assembly. When somebody ask you how are you doing, rather than saying fine, say better and better, he suggested.
He also urged the group to say 'never' to drugs rather than say 'no' to drugs.
With the use of hand motions, Sanders got students to remind themselves: I am thumb-body special and you are thumb-body special, too!
When appropriate, he suggested students learn to say, "I am sorry and will you forgive me?"
During his presentation Sanders used personal stories that made the audience laugh and cry. He left a lasting impression on the children, staff, faculty.
Distinguished guest from State Representative John Payne's office, Mr. Todd Pagliarulo, visited Kunkel for the occasion.
Principal Lori Suski announced follow-up activities. Since Sanders' visit, children are creating posters to reinforce his message. The posters will be displayed throughout
the building. The program was partially funded by Kunkel's PTO and the rest of the program was funded by a grant from the National Character Education Foundation. The Press And Journal
